At Northwest High School, Black Student Union, or BSU, hosted a movie night on February 23rd, 2022 at 6 p.m. in the high school commons. The movie they played was Remember the Titans. BSU supplied a concession stand full of snacks and BSU merchandise. They hosted this event to show the positive aspects of black history during black history month.
The first step to making this happen was to provide the students and those attending a say on which movie would be shown. The voting took place on BSU’s Instagram story. The selection of movies included Remember the TItans, Hidden Figures, Black Panther, The Hate U Give, Just Mercy, and Fruitvale Station. After a few days of voting, the community chose Remember the Titans.
BSU is going to use the money they collect to help fund their club. They hope to use the money for future activities the club participates in like Northwest Fest in the fall. BSU will also donate some of what they collect to non-profit organizations in Iowa. “The goal is to bring together the community and to help share a movie that represents a lot of what the group tries to focus on,” BSU hostess Dr. Farrell shared.
BSU members see this event as a great way to connect with the community and show them what BSU is. “A lot of people think it’s an anti-white group. Just know that BSU is for everyone and we welcome everyone to come,” BSU leader and senior Kannya Mukhtar explained. The group wants this event to help lead the way to more opportunities for BSU. “I want it to start being a yearly tradition here. And by the time [I’m] a senior it’s just a thing that happens every year and that everyone looks forward to,” sophomore Olivia Oriho said.
In the future, they hope to work with Northwest staff on different microaggressions and appropriations that students have encountered. They also plan to host different events like Ally Day and other community events such as movie night. “[I hope BSU] will have more fundraisers to help non-profit organizations,” Mukhtar said.
