One of the outstanding clubs and an off-shot in Northwest High School is the club whose membership consists of people from different cultures all over the globe. International Club, a club established to encourage students to share their culture and also learn about other cultures.
International club offers the best platform for students to socialize with each other as well as get to know about each other’s country. The club, which was established in Waukee High School, was to provide students with the opportunity of experiencing other cultures even though they are in Iowa. The club was a place where students come together to build a community to share the values of their cultures. It also gave recognition to international students and helped them to express their customs and values in the school. The club’s sole aim was to allow the people in Waukee society to learn about the cultures of other countries around the world. One unique thing about the club, to highlight the experiences of students and for them to share their stories with everyone.
International club sought to spread the diversities of cultures to the Northwest school community and have more students join and share their cultures. The club organized a dance night for students to exhibit their cultural dances. The dance took place on November 4, 2021, from 3:30 pm-5:00 pm in the multipurpose room of Waukee Northwest High School. The club members came up with the idea to showcase their respective cultural dances to raise funds and donate half of their amount of money gained from the sold tickets to a local refugee support group. It was also done for students to learn a new form of dance and improve on the ones they already knew. The club members also got the platform to teach others their dance.
Miss Stephanie, a German language teacher and the person in charge of the international club encouraged all students, not only international students but the students from Iowa as well to join the international club. She stated, “Most students from Iowa assume that they do not have a culture. We do have a culture, so everyone is welcome to share their perspective and their culture.”
