Since November of 2024, a local soda shop called Slap Soda has taken over social media as well as the Waukee area with the location being in the Goodwill parking lot, Slap Soda has gained a lot of traction.
Rebekah Walker, the owner of Slap Soda, was inspired to start Slap Soda by attending college in Utah and constantly seeing dirty soda, soda with syrup and creams added to it, everywhere.
Walker later moved to the midwest and saw how there were no soda shops, and knowing how midwesterners liked soda, she was surprised at the lack of shops. She first began to open up her shop for catering at big events such as grad parties. Later, she got the idea to buy a trailer and moved it to Waukee.
Walker shared, “My favorite thing about Slap Soda is seeing all demographics of people, young and old, enjoy their drink or treat that brings a little joy or excitement in their life!”
Walker has given her everything to Slap Soda, she works seven days a week to make delicious foods and drinks for everyone to enjoy.
Monica Bingham, one of the team leads at Slap Soda, met Walker at a pickleball group, and she quickly became one of Bingham’s closest friends.
Bingham enjoys working there because she loves chatting with coworkers and customers. She also enjoys making the drinks and pretzels and knowing that they bring a little extra joy into people’s day.
Bingham has been selected as a team lead for Slap Soda, meaning she helps Walker run Slap Soda and helps her make sure her staff is doing everything in check.
Bingham said, “Being a team lead means being aware of what needs to be done and doing all I can to help out. It means cheering everyone on–sharing tips & tricks with my coworkers and also learning from them so we can all improve and get quality drinks and treats out to customers quickly.”
She works four days a week and three to four hours at a time. She loves working at Slap Soda so she can spend time with her kids but work a job she loves.
Bart Heyn, the top customer of Slap Soda, met Walker at a catering event at Heyn’s friend’s house a few years ago; he had heard of dirty soda shops but had never tried them.
Heyn loves to support small businesses and make those who work and grind to make things better for themselves and their families. He appreciates the things that Rebekah does that no one sees, the marketing, accounting, planning, and dealing with new hires.
Heyn said, “I also think it’s awesome that Slap Soda is allowing a lot of these high school students to see, firsthand, what it takes to start and run their own business.”
Heyn has never had something from Slap Soda he has not liked! Throw some scotcheroos, pretzel bites, or coconut lime cookies in there, and Heyn will have a good day.
