Current Genocides

In countless countries, certain ethnic groups like the Darfurs and Ukrainians have been targets of brutal murders and deaths, otherwise known as targets of genocide.
The term genocide means the massacre of a large group of an ethnic group. Genocides have been a recurrent topic as hatred against a group of individuals spread across the globe. According to the Genocide Watch and Alliance Against Genocide, countries like Nicaragua and India are currently under watch of a genocide warning.
In the Israel-Hamas war, Gaza has been a direct target of mass murders, rapes and air strikes since the beginning of the ongoing war. Israel and Palestine have been in a silent war since the early 1900s, but the actual war started when Palestinian Hamas (also known as the Islamic Resistance Movement) launched a surprise attack on Israelis on October 7, 2023.
“Gaza’s Ministry of Health says more than 44,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks and thousands more are buried under rubble and threatened by illness,” mentioned Al Jazeera, a Qatari state-owned Arabic-language news television network.
Although the Israeli government and military have been committing mass murders in Gaza, Hamas has copied their methods by murdering and raping Israeli men, women and children. Both Israel and Palestine are currently on stages eight and nine of the 10 Stages of Genocide. Stage eight is the stage of persecution where the victims are identified and genocidal massacres occur, while stage nine is where extermination occurs. As of February 2025, Israel and Palestine have been in the talks of coming together and signing a ceasefire.
Another horrifying current genocide is the Russo-Ukrainian genocide. Since the beginning of the war in 2014, Russia has been throwing airstrike after airstrike on Ukraine and committing a cultural genocide. Following Russia’s annex of Crimea and funding the anti-government rebels, the war further escalated when Russia fully invaded Ukraine.
Every Russian attack shocked the world because each ambush left nothing but rubble. Families were found dead, holding each other from the attacks.
“The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that Russian air defense systems destroyed or intercepted a total of 44 Ukrainian drones as of the morning of November 20, including 20 over Novgorod Oblast; five over Kursk Oblast; four over Oryol Oblast; three each over Belgorod, Tula, and Tver oblasts; and two each over Bryansk, Moscow, and Smolensk oblasts,” revealed the ISW (Institute For The Study of War).
The Sudan-Darfur genocide started in the early months of 2003. Darfurs have been murdered, raped and forced into labor and torture. Although there have been quiet years throughout the war, it is still considered an ongoing genocide against the Darfurs.
Not only are the Darfurs being attacked, but other ethnic groups around the area have been targets of mass killings and used for torture. According to the United Nations, an estimated 18,800 civilians were dead, yet it has been noted that the estimate could be a vast undercount.
The Holocaust Museum Houston stated, “The government would attack from the air, and then, the Janjaweed forces would enact a scorched earth campaign, burning villages and poisoning wells. Nearly 400,000 people have been killed, women have been systematically raped and millions of people have been displaced as a result of these actions.”
There are many other genocides throughout the world and more genocide warnings for other countries. Even though there is sparse information about the rest of them, it does not mean they are not happening. As each genocide gets more and more attention, more people are coming out and using their platforms to speak out against them.
A small TikTok artist, @flyingkikii, made a post regarding the Israel-Hamas war with more information and expressed their thoughts on the matter.
“You would want the world to scream with you,” expressed the artist.
Genocide has long been a persistent issue, yet little to no action is taken to prevent such horrific events. Supporting Holocaust museums and educating others about the history of genocides could help prevent future atrocities.
