On February 2 and 3, Northwest Vocal Music hosted Nightfall to showcase the works of different show choir groups across Iowa.
Middle school groups performed on the first day including groups from Ankeny, Urbandale and Waukee. Northwest middle school and junior high groups were an exhibition and did not compete, leading to both Ankeny 8th grade groups landing first and second place.
On the second day, the high school varsity and junior varsity groups from Ankeny, Iowa City, Urbandale, Van Meter and Waukee performed for the competition with EOS and Aurora performing as the exhibition.
Students from Northwest’s show choir groups helped to run the event. Some jobs included escorting groups to their homerooms as they arrived and helping to set up the stage for each group. Junior Abigail Imm stated, “We prepare for the event with a few different trainings, setting up and supplying the host rooms and checking in with the teachers whose rooms we use.” She went on to state that keeping the event safe, clean and organized was of top priority for the hosting group.
Along with hosting, many were excited to perform on their home stage. Senior Kiersten Campbell said, “Performing on our stage takes out a lot of worries and stress because that’s where we practice and so we don’t have to worry about whether it’s slippery or if it’s big enough.” While performing on different stages can be exciting and all forms of exhilarating, many talked about how nice it is to perform on their stage.
