On January 7, 2024, Beverly Hills hosted the Golden Globes. The top directors, actors and actresses of the year were awarded some of the highest accolades in their field.
Some of the awarded categories are Drama Motion Picture, Best TV Series Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Motion Picture and Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Winners for these categories include Oppenheimer, The Bear, Cillian Murphy and Lily Gladstone.
With the Golden Globe Awards behind us, The Academy Awards (Oscars) are coming up. Many people are looking forward to seeing their favorite people in the film industry win an award. The categories for both of these award shows are different for one main reason. While the Golden Globes focus on TV and Film, The Oscars focus on talents specifically in film. The Golden Globes are also voted on by 199 voters, all of whom are entertainment journalists. 62 countries are represented in the voting process, and 103 voters are international.
The Oscars, hosted March 10th, are a very formal event. The Golden Globes are more informal, with more celebrities cracking jokes, and sometimes directing subtle jabs at one another. Many people remember Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, an event blasted on headlines long after it occurred. Junior Lexi Gabrielson is skeptical of these situations. She said, “I think they are definitely staged to get more people to watch [the awards].”
These events have their differences, but there are many similarities between the two events as well. Oscar award categories are very similar to the Golden Globes, but a surprising fact is that since 1991, just under half of Golden Globe winners have won the Oscar in the same category, the same year. Using this logic, movies expected to win big at the Academy Awards would include the likes of Barbie, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon. Senior Hunter Smith said “I would definitely like to see Oppenheimer, I like action movies like that. They really make you think.”
Although this may not be a real indicator of how the Oscars will play out this year, seeing some repeat winners would certainly not be out of the question. Senior Caden Shay gave his perspective on another promising picture. “[Barbie] is a very feminine movie, the story is more about guys controlling everything and then women taking over to run the city. But it is a very well-put-together film.”
The season of the Academy Awards is the finish to yet another year of film and television. As millions tune in to the Oscars on March 10th, one thing is for certain. We can look forward to 2024 being full of even more exciting twists and turns happening to our favorite on-screen actors and actresses.
