On February 4, 2024, the 66th Annual Grammy Awards will be held. On November 10, 2023, nominations were announced and included numerous talented artists like Taylor Swift, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Noah Kahan and more.
The Grammy Awards are one of the most outstanding and prestigious awards in the music industry. Artists are nominated and divided into categories based on their music achievements. (Example: best new artist, album of the year, best pop solo performance, etc). Voting then takes place, each member casting a vote and ultimately choosing the winners.
As for nominations, SZA is in the lead with nine nominations. Closely following is Phoebe Bridgers, with seven nominations, six being from Boygenius. Next follows Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, who all have six nominations this year.
This year, the Grammy Awards will be held on February 4th. Recently in mid-November, nominations were released to the public. Across Northwest, there are so many students with so many different music tastes; music and songs are very subjective, and everyone has such different opinions:
Junior Lindsey Shane said, “In terms of who is nominated, I am personally a fan of Taylor Swift, Paramore and Boygenius. I think they are all deserving of Grammy’s, as they all have high artistic ability and had large impacts this past year.”
Lilah Behounek, another junior at Northwest said, “I was surprised to see Boygenius so many times. I also don’t think Miley Cyrus should win in anything.”
When asked to talk about a specific category and give an opinion of who should win, Behounek said, “I think In Your Love by Tyler Childers should win. It’s music video was groundbreaking for the country music industry because it’s a gay marriage and it was very controversial and said a lot about Tyler as a person. I would say I don’t think Fast Car should win because its lyricism isn’t the best. And the other songs are irrelevant.”
Junior Alexis Ripperger said, “Although Nicki’s Pink Friday 2 album did not come out until last Friday, I would have liked to see her get a nomination.”
This year, music listeners have seen an abundance of talented artists, songwriters and performers dominating the music industry. Listeners have seen and heard so many people who are more than deserving of these prestigious Grammy awards, and hope all of their favorites can be rewarded for their immense talent and hard work.
