On September 9 and 10, the well-earned titles of US Open singles winners were given to Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.
The US Open is one of the most anticipated tennis tournaments of the year; it is one of four Grand Slams: a title and win all professional tennis players want.
This year, 19-year-old Coco Gauff won the Women’s singles match. She is the youngest American woman to win the US Open since Serena Williams and the fourth American teenager to win in the “Open Era” of tennis.
Tennis fan and senior Jenna Statler said, “It’s really cool to see a teenager win as someone who’s close in age with her, and being the first since Serena Williams is really an accomplishment. I hadn’t really heard of her until this year’s US Open but I enjoyed watching her play and win her first Grand Slam.”
Many cannot wait to see what the future holds for young Coco Gauff: she is on the road to a successful career and to be able to watch her win her first Grand Slam title on live TV was an honor and such an experience. Gauff had to face Aryna Sabalenka in the finals: the number one ranked in Women’s singles. Gauff took the win with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
As for men’s singles, fans wanted another Alcaraz-Djokovic match after this year’s Wimbledon, but Alcaraz was defeated by Medvedev in the Grand Slam semi-finals, leading Djokovic to face him for the prize. Medvedev was defeated in the match 3-6, 65-77, 3-6 and Djokovic became a US Open winner for the fourth time.
Aili Stanger, a sophomore and tennis player at Northwest High School said, “I was surprised that Carlos Alcaraz got out on the semi-finals, especially after winning Wimbledon against Djokovic. I was rooting for him but still happy for [Djokovic].
Statler said, “Even though I’m not the biggest fan of Djokovic, he’s been playing for a long time and it was definitely expected for him to win. He’s one of the best [players] right now.”
“Gauff and Djokovic have proved to be really good players and I think most players are deserving of their wins, especially with their hard work to get where they are today,” Stanger said.
This year’s US Open was an eventful one. Fans always enjoy the environment and entertainment each Grand Slam brings, and this one is especially special for American fans. The two singles winners worked hard to reach this point and we congratulate them for achieving such a notable title.
