Timeless Tale: Apple Against Android

While the Waukee School District uses Apple products, there are several other brands of technology that Waukee has opinions on such as Apple and Android products.

Apple is one of the most popular companies when it comes to its products and pleasing looks. But the popular question of looks alone, are they enough to take first place in the best technology companies? Are they actually reputable and quality?

“I think Apple is a fantastic company… the design and hardware are matching of that [good] quality, and I appreciate that,” said Technology & Innovation Leader Amanda DeGroote.

Apple arguably works well when it comes to their phones and is simple to set up. 

“Yes, and it’s intentional. Their new user experience is unmatchable and new phones can be set up literally with the press of a button. This allows them to appeal to nearly all consumers,” said Sophomore Ben Boonstra. 

Conveniency-wise, Apple is the go-to brand for phones and other products. Just because they are convenient does not mean they are the best, even if Apple processors are faster than the typical Android. Compared to Android, Apple has a lot of restrictions that can not be done on an Apple device against an Android. Most Android phones use a USB-C port which can transfer power from 5-10 Gbps, while an iPhone 15 can only transfer data (USB 2.0) at 480 Mbps. This means some Androids can transfer this information almost 10 times faster than an iPhone depending on the model. Android was above time with its speed but some of the newest iPhones are just now coming out with faster speeds (USB 3.2) that are becoming head-to-head with Android. Androids can access the entire device’s internal storage when the device is plugged in, while Apple can only access things like photos, videos and purchased content. 

Android is very open when it comes to app stores. Apple on the other hand is only restricted to one which can be very limiting. Many people find it frustrating when they want to download an app and it is Android only. Because Android has the availability to so many different stores to purchase or download apps it also comes with a much more variety of applications that people can get compared to an Apple device. 

“It is pretty angering, [limitations of Apple] I do not use my phone for games a whole lot… I bought wallpaper engine [Application not offered on iPhone] and would like to use it on all my devices.” said senior IT Student Cohen Kurt

This means the more apps people can get, the more people can do. The more opportunities to do more complex things like maybe running VR through a phone. Android products can be rooted, meaning it can gain access to everything on its device. The device usually comes with presets that allow people to not change or switch around any necessary assets that are by default set up with your phone so people do not mess up the device. Before Apple Devices could be jailbreaked but Apple patched most of these exploits and the last known jailbreak was done by Pwn20wnd on Twitter in 2021.
