On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, Halloween occurs. Halloween is an occasion, where individuals dress up in fun and scary costumes, as it is celebrated to scare off wandering ghosts or spirits.
Halloween has thrived over centuries since it originated more than 2,000 years ago. Halloween costumes have gained significant popularity as they enable individuals to embrace their artistic abilities, enjoy themselves, and take their thoughts through imaginative, and amazing costumes. These costumes transform individuals who are into diverse characters, creatures, or objects, thereby contributing to the celebrations of Halloween. This occasion often presents an opportunity for individuals of all age groups to partake in Halloween festivities.
Junior Hannah Spencer of Northwest High School believes Halloween holds a variety of significance for individuals, with children associating it primarily with costumes and candy. Spencer states, “Halloween costumes hold a considerable importance,” as there is no age limit to partaking in this tradition. The act of dressing up for Halloween sets it apart from other holidays. Halloween serves as a path for enjoyment and an opportunity to bond with friends and family.
Despite the setback caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in a decrease in participation during Halloween, many people managed to find alternative ways to celebrate this holiday. Some individuals were inspired to wear masks, ensuring they could still embrace the spirit of Halloween while adhering to safety guidelines. Others chose to leave candy bowls outside their homes, allowing children to enjoy the tradition of trick-or-treating in a contactless manner. All to keep the spirit of Halloween alive.
When looking into the participation in Halloween-related activities in the year 2023 is expected to be significantly different than in the year 2022, as indicated by an annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics on behalf of the National Retail Federation. The survey reveals that “73% [of Americans] will participate in Halloween-related activities,” which has marked a record high surpassing the year 2022 at 69%. This spike in participation represents the number of individuals partaking in Halloween activities.
Abby Keen, a senior at Northwest High School, thoroughly embraces the festive atmosphere of Halloween. Keen, who is known for her vibrant personality and imaginative nature, possesses the ability to bring together individuals in the enjoyment of this holiday. Halloween costumes, in particular, hold a special significance as they distinguish this occasion from other festivities, “I prefer non-scary costumes, only because you can make anything look scary,” Keen said. Halloween serves as a platform for individuals to express themselves in creative and skillful ways.
