On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the Northwest Student Council hosted Northwest Fest to show off clubs at Northwest, fundraise and celebrate the start of the school year.
Northwest Fest (NW Fest) is meant to be fun for all age ranges but mainly appeals to students of Northwest High School. At Northwest Fest, there are booths to show off different clubs and activities of the school. For example, Xavier Lago, the president of Los Latinos Unidos, held a booth at Northwest Fest.
“I’d say anywhere from 50 to 100 people visited our tent,” stated Lago.
In the planning of NW Fest, Northwest’s Student Council found success through presenting different sports and clubs of Northwest. Not only was there a high amount of representation of school clubs throughout the event, but it was all made possible by the Student Council Committee.
“[Northwest Fest] was meant to bring together the community and provide a place for clubs to be introduced to the public and celebrate homecoming,” stated Lola Vogelaar, one of the Student Council members who helped plan for Northwest Fest.
Some of the sports teams with booths at the festival were Boys and Girls Wrestling, Dance, Volleyball, Boys Golf, Cheer, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Football and Baseball. Some activities presented were EOS Show Choir, Random Acts of Kindness, Los Latinos Unidos, Speech and Theatre, Best Buddies, Black Student Union, Culture Club, Gay-Straight Alliance and Environmental Club.
The general public felt positive about Northwest Fest and specifically found it fun to explore different clubs and activities throughout the school. Students could walk up to different booths and earn prizes and candy through different activities related to the booths. This was a great incentive for any age- from toddlers to seniors- to explore different activities at Northwest and also showcase different cultures through activities at the booths and candy presented.
“We had tons of different kids come and try our candy,” Lago further stated.
The festival’s overall message was to show families what Northwest has to offer, mainly what students can get involved in and how deep Northwest’s roots go. Although the school has only operated for three years, it is clear that there are many ways to get involved with extracurricular activities at Northwest.
“It’s a fun way to explore different clubs and hang out with your friends,” Sophie Olson, a sophomore attendee stated.
Many students and families could be found traveling from booth to booth with friends.
