Carson Parker, a student at Waukee Northwest High School, was given the opportunity to be part of the 2023 Jazz Band of America.
Jazz Band of America, hosted by Music for All National Festival and directed by Alan Baylock, is a week-long event where 17-18 of the best high school musicians are hand picked throughout America and are gathered together to work together and improve their crafts. Out of the 50 states, two members are from Iowa, one being a Northwest student- Carson Parker.
Carson Parker is a senior at Waukee Northwest High School and has been playing piano ever since the 3rd grade. He participates in band– playing the alto saxophone– as well as Jazz Orchestra– playing the piano.
Parker is the only piano player for the ensemble. He was first introduced to Jazz Band of America by his mentor, Nate Sparks, who was also a member of the band when he was in high school. Sparks decided to inform and assist Parker with the opportunity. Parker, said, “Nate really, really pushed that out on me and he’s constantly pushing me everyday to always try to get better.” It took him a long time to polish his craft. He improved by taking private lessons. He also took any band opportunities that were presented to him. He knew he was going to sacrifice time if he wanted to chase his musical talent. It already takes a lot of time and effort to put together a tape for any musical audition, this is especially so for something of this caliber. Parker added, “You need it to reflect your highest musical ability.”
All of these connections from school and private lessons helped Parker a lot. There is a level people must be at to even start the audition process. “It took a lot of practice, a lot of time collaborating with other musicians, playing music with other people, and getting a feel for things,” Parker explained. Parker would like to mention another member of the 2023 Jazz Band of America from Iowa, Jack Deahl. He is from Southeast Polk High School, “There are actually two people from the state of Iowa that are in which I think is really cool,” Parker expressed.
Overall, through all the practice and time dedicated to music, he’s reached a checkpoint where his talents will be able to bloom along with being able to share to the public. Carson Parker is one of the many talented people that will build a strong title for the Waukee Northwest’s history on a national level.
