2022 Trend Recap

Many trends emerged in 2022, and the new year will bring even more trends for students at Northwest High School.
2022 brought many new and continued trends from 2021 into 2022. Fashion trends, forms of entertainment, apps, and even challenges emerged in 2022.
One of the biggest trends of 2022 was BeReal. BeReal was created in 2020, but 65% of its users downloaded BeReal in the summer of 2022. “My softball team did lots of BeReals during the state tournament, which were a lot of fun,” stated senior Megan Sprauge.
Another popular trend of 2022 was the Lululemon belt bags. They were selling out in stores and online, so people started selling the bags on eBay for twice the price. “Lululemon bags got popular because lululemon was popular. It blew up on Tik Tik, so everyone started buying them,” stated sophomore Zuri Patterson.
The last trend featured in 2022 was UGGs. One of the most popular UGGs of 2022 was the UGG Classic Ultra Mini and the UGG slippers. “My favorite trend was UGGs because they are very comfortable and stylish,” stated sophomore Lilah Kress.
2022 has brought us a lot of new trends, but there are a few trends some Northwest Students believe are best to be left behind. Junior Charlie Downing stated, “I think Jordans 1s (should be left in 2022) because they’re ugly as heck.” Senior Sprague mentioned, “The flare leggings [should be left behind] because they’re not my favorite.”
While many trends emerged in 2022, not all will transition into the new year. 2023 will create its own distinctive styles and fashions, and outgrown trends will be left behind. Some people are excited to see certain trends retired in 2022. However, there are some that people are not ready to forget about so soon.
The Y2K aesthetic has returned to fashion, and with it, the resurgence of UGG boots (and slippers!). The rapid rise of UGG boots has yet to slow and is becoming increasingly popular for influencers and high school students. Sophomore Lucy Weber said, “I think we’re going to see more UGGs next year, like funky UGGs and new types.”
Nike shoes are a trend that some want to stay popular in the new year. While they aren’t anything new, Nike is constantly releasing new styles and designs, causing trends to fluctuate and change. Some of the most popular shoe styles from last year are Jordans, Air Max 97s, and Blazer ’77s. Kress stated, “I like Nike shoes, especially my Nike Air Max because they are really stylish and comfortable.” However, some people’s style swings in a different, more vintage direction. Downing said, “[Nike] should keep continuing the Jordan 4s; they’re hot as heck.”
Some non-fashion-related trends emerged in 2022 as well. Last year was a year of self-discovery and change for many. Fresh out of the pandemic, people had to find whom they wanted to be and what they wanted to do. Senior Christain Hollister stated, “I think that it’s a good change that people are trying to look and find new ways to do things, and I think that’s a trend that we should keep going in 2023.”
While there are some trends many wish to remain popular, there are some that people want to abandon in 2022. Low-rise pants were a huge fad in the early 2000s, and recently many Y2K fashions have been making a comeback, but not always for the better. Weber complained, “I really don’t like the feeling of low-rise pants; they’re so uncomfortable.”
Whether you agree or disagree with last year’s most popular styles, it is safe to say that this year will bring new trends to argue and debate.
