On the night of November 15th, 2022 in a special announcement, former President Donald Trump announced his 2024 presidential candidacy.
Former President Donald Trump has officially announced his candidacy in the presidential election. “I was excited when Trump announced his presidency because of the opportunity Americans will have to vote for him in the 2024 election,” Sophomore Ava Retzlaff stated. Former President Trump has been in the eye of controversy ever since his impeachment trial toward the end of his term. The former president is now having an investigation into Mar-a-Lago, a resort owned by the former President since 1985. Mar-a-largo was raided by the FBI, where they found boxes of files containing classified items of Iran and China’s intelligence that should have remained in the white house. Despite the controversy, the former President has announced he is wanting to retry becoming president once again. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is a person who some people have had their eye on for a very possible and difficult opponent for the former president in the primaries. “I was honestly surprised because he didn’t have a lot of support, even from the other republicans, so I thought he would leave it to someone else,” senior Hadley Ricklefs said. On November 15th, President Trump officially announced his third run for office. While 500 other people had already filed out the paperwork to run in the 2024 election, the current President Joe Biden was not on the list of those individuals, nor was the current Vice President Kamala Harris.
“It was kind of expected and I had planned on it. I supported his original presidency even though he made some controversial decisions and I didn’t really like some of the tweets that he would post… but I thought that he was a decent president compared to our president now Joe Biden,” Senior Stanley Connell stated.
Much speculation has surrounded the topic of possible running partners for the former president, ever since he announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds comes to people’s minds. The Governor has a good relationship with the former president, not only being allowed to use the same or very similar campaign slogans for her own re-election campaign but also endorsing her campaign for re-election. Reynolds was re-elected as Iowa governor on November 6, 2022. Richard Grennell is also a highly possible running partner option for the former President. Grennell is the former acting director of the United States National Intelligence. On November 21, 2022, The Trump administration sent out a poll to see who the public believes the running mate for the former president should be and along with Reynolds and Grennell, Ron DeSantis was also listed. Both Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump were also seen as possible running mates for their father in this election. Trump has yet to confirm who his running partner will be for his third Presidential run.
