Marching Band Season Recap

The Northwest Royal Brigade marching band performed their last show of the year, The Deep, at the October 15th football game at the Waukee Northwest Stadium.
The band made many good memories this year and a few Brigade members stepped up to share a few of their favorites. Many agreed one of the best performances was during the Minnesota trip to the US Bank Stadium. Sophomore Stefi Olsen said, “I think everyone sounded their best and it was just such a great location. It was a very, very exciting place to be.” But all good things always have their worst and that was shown in the Bands Of America (BOA) Regional Finals. Senior Carson Oakes spoke about how it wasn’t just a trainwreck at the start of the performance. He stated, “Another one of the reasons why I feel bad saying that… is because I had been looking forward to that performance since the previous season, so the fact that it turned out the way it did made me feel disheartened.”
One favorite between all band members was the trident work at the beginning of the 3rd movement. Sophomore Claire Tigges said, “I loved the trident work, it looked so cool when I watched it the first time and the best was the audience’s reaction when we pulled the flag from the trident.” It was something different and new to all of the band members. Being trained to work with equipment like that is usually left to the color guard, but many have agreed that it was one of the most fun parts of the show. Oakes explains, “The reason why I loved it so much was because it felt so cool and fun to perform since there was always a crowd reaction to us pulling out the flags from the tridents.”
Another big thing for the band was when the show was announced. The show’s name was revealed, The Deep. Junior Chase Hamilton said, “I thought it was really cool, like way better than last year.” There were so many positive comments about the show. Most of the marching band members had more fun performing and being in the show with all the new ideas like trident work or a stage with a treasure chest and anchor.
Overall, many of the students agreed that even with all of the show’s low points, they still enjoyed the show and all of the moments involved with it. People had many good memories from the BOA Stadium, the Mall of America, the first marching band performance, their first show at Northwest and many more. Students want to thank Chad Friesleben and Christopher Strohmaier– the directors, the talented coaches that came to assist with each section, the band families that took time out of their day to assist, as well as each and every band member. They helped to create a memorable show for everyone involved.
