Homecoming Dance: Before And After

Students at Northwest High School were invited to attend the homecoming dance on October 1st, 2022. The student council began planning the homecoming dance in the summer and got deeper into planning the dance at the beginning of the school year. The theme was Midnight In Miami. Junior Morgan Gallagher was inspired to base the school dance theme on Pitbull since she had recently gone to the pitbull concert. Pitbull is famous for using Miami as a theme throughout his music and concerts.
Gallagher said, “ Isabelle Pierce and I, we were thinking about Pitbull, and honestly we were going to do something about the 305 because he’s from Miami and we felt like that would be a fun dance theme.” Gallagher hoped that students at Northwest were excited about the homecoming dance and she hopes the students looked forward to homecoming week.
Gallagher’s personal experience from Northwest 2021 homecoming was, as she explained, a lot of fun. “I went with a group of friends and it was fun to get together before the dance and then meet some more of my friends after the dance,” Gallagher stated. “I think the music was really good last year. That’s definitely something I remember,” Gallagher continued.
Vee Winegarner is a sophomore at Northwest. It will be her first year attending a homecoming dance. “I’m excited it’s like a real dance,” explained Winegarner.
Last year at Prarieveiw there was a dance for the eighth and ninth graders. Winegarner attended the Prairieview dance during her ninth-grade year. She said, “[I think that the dance will] have good music and good food not just chips like the Parieveiw dance”. Winegarner thinks this year’s homecoming theme is original and inspiring. Winegarner hoped to see a disco ball and fun lights.
Senior Camdon Spitzenberger has advice for underclassmen. “Just be social. You know talk to people. Don’t be afraid. That was my issue, I wouldn’t want to talk to anyone,” said Spitzenberger.
When asked how he feels about this being his last opportunity to attend a homecoming dance Spitzenberger claimed, “To be honest, I bet a lot of people care, but I’m just ready to graduate.”
Spitzenberger thought the theme had a lot of potential. “I think that with the LEDs in the school they could do something cool about it because Miami is really bright and colorful,” expressed Spitzenberger.
On Oct 1st, 2022, student council member Morgan Gallagher, Vee Winegarner and other students attended the homecoming dance. There were many mixed emotions about how the dance went
Gallagher said, “Before and after the dance was definitely a lot of fun.”
Winegarner explained, “When I got there it was pretty boring. Like no one was dancing, but after like maybe 20 minutes people actually started dancing and it got more fun.”
Junior Gallagher said, “I had a really good time last year at homecoming, so I feel like this time it kinda lowered my expectations a little bit”.
The Northwest student council members helped plan out the homecoming dance. When asked if other student council members were satisfied with their expectations, Gallagher said, “Yes. I think like the decorations and all the work we put into it and everything that we can control during the dance was met, I know the DJ made some questionable choices, especially with the corn song but that was something we couldn’t necessarily control at the dance since we had sent him a playlist and he didn’t exactly play all the songs we sent.”
Winegarner expressed, “The music was great the corn song was something else”.
Gallagher said, “Honestly overall were happy with the dance and the whole week in general and how the participation went”.
Senior Spitzenberger did not comment after the dance.
