5 Borough Bagels: Local Business Spotlight

5 Borough Bagels is a locally owned bagel shop that has been open since 2016.

The owners of 5 Borough Bagels are Sarah and Toney Chem. The manager is Oreanna Dee. They offer a variety of different bagels and cream cheeses. There are 12 different bagels and 12 house-made cream cheeses. They are located in the Des Moines metro and they plan to open another location in Urbandale in the upcoming year. They will be able to make their bagels fresher and can make double the number of bagels, serving their customers faster. They are open Monday through Friday from 6:30 A.M-2:00 P.M and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 A.M.- 2:00 P.M. Katie Rush, a sophomore, said, “I had it for lunch once. It’s really good if you still want to have something healthy.” In addition, 5 Borough Bagels has received positive reviews from all kinds of people that have tried their bagels, coffees, lunch sandwiches and more. Ava Ketel, a junior, stated, “I’ve heard lots of really good things about 5 Borough Bagels and it looks really good.” The owners of 5 Borough are always making sure that their customers are getting what they asked for in a reasonable time.

The employees of 5 Borough also work very hard to make sure that their food and drinks are always the best they can be by making their bagels fresh every day and by roasting their coffee and espresso from Capital City Coffee. Kate Poole, a sophomore, exclaimed, “It’s a really good place to eat and they have quality food that tastes super good.” 5 Borough stands out from other locally owned restaurants because they are switching and changing the menu monthly, they add items and take off items from the menu based on what they think their customers would like. This fall, 5 Borough Bagels specialty lattes are pumpkin spice, brown butter toffee cream, almond cookie butter, raspberry chai, caramel apple butter and peppermint mocha. They change their latte menus seasonally, and they also recently also added new cream cheeses to their menu, they are hot honey and olive pimento. There are so many options to choose from when it comes to their bagel and cream cheeses. Their bagel flavors stand out from other bagel shops, you can get anything from a plain bagel to a french toast bagel.
