Northwest High School has a plethora of artists who have developed their skills over time; here are some of their stories.
Sarah Kapustka, a junior artist, talks about her experience of being an artist. “I probably started in 2015, 2016, and probably in the summer of 2016. I started to take it seriously because I realized how much fun it was and like a stress reliever, and I realized, wow this is pretty cool,” Kaputska stated. She plans to take it more seriously and illustrate for books. Her art medium she likes to use it either digital or painting, “if you mess up you get to go back instead of erasing and it won’t erase.” Her tip is that time is a big part of art and to stop away from your art before trying to constantly fix everything.
Sophomore Nora Stoianova, said, “I’ve been drawing since I was like three and I started taking it more seriously in third grade.” Her preferred medium for making her art is digital due to it being easier in her opinion. Previously she had drawn the 2018-2019 Waukee Middle School yearbook cover, filled with her drawings. Her favorite thing about art is “just the creativity, I like to create things, and show what’s in my brain.” A tip she would give to other artists is to practice.
Junior, Caitlin Cecil, described her experience of being an artist. She started art before she was in kindergarten and started to take art more seriously in middle school. “In kindergarten, I was pretty sure I wanted for it to be my job, but I didn’t really start to take it more seriously until I got older, ” Cecil stated. She talked about her favorite thing about art being, “that there’s a bunch of possibilities of what you can make.” Her art medium is digital and the thing that led her to art was the ability to make cool things. Her tip for artists was to be observant of other artists and people will be able to make art they like.
At Northwest, there is a wide variety of art courses for students to take and expand on their skills as these artists have done. Art teacher, Mr. Patton, runs an afterschool club, Art Club, for students to finish their art projects and hang out with friends.
