Apple Juice vs Orange Juice: A Show Choir Debate

Northwest High School’s varsity show choir, Eos, has been struck with the popular debate, apple juice vs orange juice. At first glance, this debate is nothing but silly fun, but to the students, it is worth much more. The students of Eos participated in a survey which revealed that 62.8% of students prefer apple juice; 25.6% prefer orange juice; 9.3% like both and 2.3% disagreed with all three options and chose milk.
Students who argue that apple juice is better say that it is sweeter and orange juice is just too bitter. They also complain about the fact that once orange juice has been drunk, it is almost impossible to enjoy anything else. “You can’t have orange juice, then have a pie. It’s gonna taste bad. You can have apple juice with anything and it tastes good,” senior Ashton Mapes explained. Many students have also shared their love for the feeling of nostalgia that apple juice gives them. Senior Saffron Schleusner wrote, “Apple is nostalgic. It provides a sense of hominess. An escape from a cruel adult world.” Others argue that orange juice is more childish. They feel that apple juice is more sophisticated. In the survey, senior Charlie Petersen explained, “Orange juice has like a soft, fuzzier feeling (child vibes) to it whereas apple juice has like a hard, crispy feeling (sophisticated vibes).”
The students that sided with orange juice love the citrusy flavor, texture, and nutritional benefits it provides. They think that apple juice is too plain and does not give off the right vibe. Senior Chloe Barbour wrote, “It’s classic and makes me feel good after drinking it. It’s very tasty and also keeps me awake.” These orange juice lovers argue that it is more sophisticated than apple juice. They feel that apple juice is advertised more for kids and orange juice is advertised more for adults.
This debate started as an innocent disagreement between a few seniors. Then escalated to group chats, then a full-on debate. “I have an obsession with orange juice and I’m pretty sure I brought it up and someone said, “apple juice is better” and that’s how the war started,” senior Natalie Harris explained. This may seem like a frivolous argument, but in reality, it is a passionate debate among Eos students. “Food is something you care about a lot. We argue about it all the time… So I think that’s passionate for anyone, really,” Junior Max Spackman shared.
Because this is such a passionate topic for the Eos students, there is no changing their minds. “We’re just so adamant at this point that what we like is the best thing. It’s like sports teams. You’re a fan of your team and you won’t change. You have rivals, that’s okay. It’s just part of the game.” Spackman explained. “I think it’s cause we don’t see much competition. It’s a wholesome thing to do in show choir. We’re just competitive people and we want to win.” Mapes shared. There have been many surveys about the apple juice vs orange juice debate, and they all came to different conclusions.
