Weird December Weather

December is here, a time where the sun sets early and the winds are bitterly cold. That’s what’s supposed to happen at least. Iowa is a strange state that’s either hot or chilling to the bone.
December is here, a time where the sun sets early and the winds are bitterly cold. That’s what’s supposed to happen at least. Iowa is a strange state that’s either hot or chilling to the bone. The 15th of December was a strange day. After a week of chilling weather, the 15th felt like a nice chill morning. But when the weather is suddenly good in December, that usually means a storm is about to come through. The Waukee community school district had to call for schools to follow an early-out schedule for the day due to severe winds later that evening. Waukee did receive the strong winds relatively well, most of Waukee still had power after the storm.
Most students and teachers at Northwest high school were able to adjust pretty well to the couple hours of high winds on December 15th. Senior Carter Sanders described the general weather as “a little bit iffy”, and spent the windy evening at home with his family. Other seniors, Ethan Cecil and Tyler Andrews also shared what they were doing, “I was just sitting in my basement with my family” and “I was stuck at a friend’s house” respectively. Tyler also expressed disappointment with one of the days in December being “70 degrees”.
From a teacher’s perspective, math teacher Mr. Hartman was still satisfied with the weather in general despite no snow, “I’m ok with it not happening until January.” Hartman also used the time during the high winds warning to stay inside and watch tv.
Everyone interviewed also reported no power loss or any personal property damaged during the storm. Overall Waukee seems to have taken the wind pretty well compared to other parts of the U.S. or even Iowa itself. December is back to getting cold again near winter break, the only question now is, will we actually get snow for Christmas. While not having snow can be a bummer for a lot of people who find it essential for the Christmas spirit, they can at least be happy with no more high-speed crazy winds… (for now).
