The Girls Basketball team has shown prominence to be a State contender again this season. After an easy blowout against Ames 84-14, many believe that Northwest is taking off where Waukee Girls Basketball left it last season.
Northwest lost 4 starting senior basketball players last year and many bench players due to the split coming into this season. Players like Payton Kelderman, Lindsey Kelderman, Katie Dinnebier and Megan Earney are all gone with many more players also now playing for Waukee Highschool instead of Northwest. The Waukee 2020-2021 team went 14-1 and won the state championship. Junior boys basketball player Rocco Punelli said, “The 2020-2021 Waukee girls basketball team played some of the best basketball I have ever seen in my life. If I had one word to describe it it would be dominant.” The returning players from the Girls state championship team are Natalie Galagher, Sadie Maas, Camryn Weers, Reagan Bartholomew, Abigail Jones, Meghan Lanz and Bailie Kroll. Players like Abigail Jones, Camryn Weers and Reagan Bartholomew have stepped up big this season as leaders for the Northwest girls basketball team. Some younger players like Meghan Lanz, Sadie Maas, Josie Vanderkroll and Natalie Galagher have stepped up big for the Wolves this season. Sophomore Sadie Maas said, “I think the charisma in this team is one of the best qualities we have, we play really good team basketball and each of us knows our role.”
Head Coach Guess 4a coach of the year is working with far fewer players this year than every other year but he is still making the most of it. The girl’s basketball team has started off the year with some extremely close losses and some really great wins, Coach Guess is continuing his run as being a successful head coach. Coach Guess said, “Some of the best qualities in this team are strong leadership in the seniors. Reagan Bartholomew, Abigail Jones, Camryn Weers and Bailie Kroll. Some other good qualities are resilience and being able to make adjustments on the fly.” Northwest has left high expectations for Coach Guess with his great history as a head coach and he is living up to those expectations this season.
